Having worked in rural, urban and suburban public school districts, I’ve witnessed a lot of inequities. One that was consistent in all four was the misuse of resources. I’ve witnessed a reading/language arts series disposed of as part of a textbook adoption because it was too costly to ship them to Ghana. I’ve witnessed fully functional furniture disposed of because a school miles away with unsafe desks did not have logistical resources to receive the donation. I’ve witnessed boxes of novel sets stockpiled in the basement because they were purchased by a canceled program, when there was a need for the titles on Donors Choose. In all three examples there was a student in need of these resources but access was denied. I hope to find a way to create more equitable access to surplus educational resources so that all students have access to achieve success.
