Challenge

Only 16.4% of students nationwide are required to take a personal finance course to graduate high school. Students from low-income backgrounds are half as likely to have taken a personal finance course compared to other wealthier peers (NGPF Survey: bit.ly/2GBeGRo). All over social media, you will see posts about "I wish I would've learned _____ in high school" (fill in the blank with any life skill or personal finance topic). I am fortunate enough to teach these exact subjects as a Family and Consumer Science teacher, but many districts don't have these programs, or they can't fill the positions due to the huge teacher shortage we have for FCS teachers in the US. So, how can we increase engagement and access to Personal Finance, Life Skills and other Family and Consumer Science courses, especially in lower income areas?
