Challenge
As a mentor to students at different schools it can be a challenge to keep students engaged, and working towards their targets. This is particularly challenging when there is a delay in the next mentor session and students feel that their efforts are not being seen due to physical distance. Students selected for mentoring are often easily disengaged, not consistent, have a lack of positive role models and unconditional positive regard. Where mentoring is effective, the mentor has fostered a supportive yet challenging relationship with the mentee. This powerful relationship is essential in driving and assessing aspirations and effort. So when the mentor breaks contact and appears to not be checking in on or offering encouragement the mentee can disengage further from the process. This also means that mentor sessions are less effective as progress is limited and the targets remain the same.
