Challenge
There is a huge gap between knowing and doing when it comes to Artificial Intelligence (AI) development and implementation. Despite many who profess to be the expert in AI in Education, many lack the technical exposure and knowledge. Due to the volume of new information and rapid changes in this space, it is challenging for the educators and school leaders to differentiate the real benefits of using AI tools in their own contexts. Furthermore, the danger and the opportunity cost of using AI tools in education have not been well researched. Many educators are anxious and stressed by the discussion around AI while having to grapple with the misuse of AI by the students. Many educators have reported that they are concerned about the students cheating and not appropriately using AI as study aid or educational tools. They have also reported that they are very concerned about bias in the AI algorithms that have been publicized. School leaders and parents are also concerned about student privacy and cellphone addiction as more and more social media or gaming platforms are using AI algorithms to keep the students stay on the platform. As we approach the election cycle, the concerns around fake news generated by AI including the possibility of prevalence of deepfake videos have intensified.
