Challenge

Teachers are leaving the profession at an alarming rate. Research suggests that around 50% of them don't make it to Year 5. One of the top reasons cited for the move to a different career is the lack of autonomy. In other words, teachers feel that they have no control over what happens in their schools. New teachers know the most cutting-edge strategies / approaches for increasing growth and learning; significant numbers of them leaving the field means that students miss out on incredible educational opportunities. This is especially true for populations (like SPED or ESOL) or in neighborhoods considered "challenging," where the attrition rate is even higher. Traditional school leaders cannot do the work of making schools "work" alone. Helping teachers realize their leadership ability(ies) to bring about positive changes outside of their classrooms will get them engaged in their school buildings and keep them in the profession longer.
