As a former middle school language arts teacher and now Educational Technology Specialist I have witnessed a decline in student engagement due to a lack of interest and or motivation. Often times students don’t find school interesting or the learning experiences valuable, relevant or relatable. As we prepare students to be college and career ready, it's crucial to engage all learners in real-world learning. Unfortunately, so many teachers have become accustomed to traditional ways of teaching and are reticent to make changes in their instruction for fear of discomfort or failure. In my role, I seek to support teachers in providing students project-based, standards driven learning opportunities, incorporating content in meaningful ways. My challenge is getting teachers to be willing to try new and innovative tools and resources, enhancing their instruction to engage their learners. I want teachers to be willing to embrace teaching 21st century students.
