School stress is on the rise for both students and teachers. We are living in what has been labeled “the age of anxiety,” and more and more teachers are experiencing such extreme burnout it is causing them to leave the profession. At the same time, in the UK, extreme cases of anxiety in students are resulting in ever-increasing cases of selective-mutism. With so much time spent at school, it is undeniable that there are several fundamental changes that could be made within the education system that could help ease the burden of these pressures; and at the very least, more emphasis needs to be placed on prioritising the wellbeing of teachers and students during the school day. This matters in education, not only because we want our students and staff to be happy and healthy, but because studies have shown that a relaxed brain actually learns and retains information better.
