Challenge

In education, many schools and their approaches to teaching and learning have not changed significantly in years and innovation remains largely unexplored. Innovation involves a different way of looking at problems and solving them. With the digital influence in every person’s life, children’s exposure to technology is more than ever now. In a way, they have constant exposure to STEM in their daily lives. Thus, it is important to educate them about the same. One is more receptive to and capable of learning at a younger age. That is why it is important to inculcate STEM learning and innovation or tinkering activities from an early age, along with discipline, etiquettes, and social skills. Many schools are focusing on these activities by engaging teachers trainings, establishing idea labs or stem labs, participating in various event and competitions, using various online resources. Programs and activities in schools that encourage innovative thinking and problem solving, e.g., via design thinking or project-based learning, will certainly have long term benefits. In the shorter term, idea competitions . Such things are initiated but needs to be further worked upon from ground level. As the community needs to be aware and engaged as when the parent or teacher is not aware they tent to restrict their child to participate in innovation activities. These activities require lot of time and resources as well at times not in hand of students. This in turns affect the innovation index as I have experienced that subject teachers focus on marks and compel students to score good marks rather than participating in stem competitions and the reason is that they are themself not aware with the growing field and our education system still focuses on marks when it comes to admission in universities or colleges.
