Challenge
The challenge I am currently experiencing in education is how to teach generative AI at the elementary school level. After ChatGPT became so widely used in education over the last year as well as many other generative AI bots it has become a challenge for educators in the lower levels, especially with the privacy protections for students under 13, to figure how and what they can use themselves and with students. As more students start to use generative AI in the upper grades in ways that they shouldn't it continues to negatively impact they lower levels as admin, teachers, and parent are extremely reluctant to even have a conversation on how to use generative AI in the classroom. Our students are exploring at home and bringing that to the classroom with them but we have to stop it as we currently can't teach them explicitly how to use it properly. We are also struggling with what we are able to use because while AI is great for many things, students aren't able to fully utilize innovative programs because they are not sure how to even begin as the program uses AI and the student isn't sure what is being asked of them without a human adult to explain. As I met with other educators over summer in our county, it has shown me that we are all struggling with the same challenges and the technology just keeps getting better and better, while we are still unsure of how to use it to help ourselves and students be successful.
