The engagement of parents and carers within the learning of their children is widely acknowledged to raise achievement, self-esteem, motivation and engagement. Overall, positive engagement from parents and carers has been shown to increase aspirations of learners and a desire to learn. Parents and carers face many barriers to engagement in their children's learning from economic challenges, ethnic and cultural barriers or their own negative experiences of school. The increasing use of technology introduces another barrier to involvement for many. With the sudden closing of schools the value of parental support and engagement in learning has been highlighted more than ever. My challenge is to empower parents in ways in which they can support and encourage their children's learning.
