A challenge that I am currently facing in education is rooted in the limited voice for students in the LGBTQ community and the lack of understanding these students feel from their school community and family. Many of these students struggle with finding their place, and they lack knowledge of resources and support systems that exist. Many teachers struggle, especially in regards to students in the transgender community. Because they have had no training on issues related to transgender students, many teachers are responsible for unintentionally hurtful blunders on everything from the proper pronouns to use, to language that will make transgender students feel accepted and welcome. I want all students to have a safe place to belong and experience acceptance in their schools. Many devastating statistics tell us that we need to address these needs because human lives depend upon us to care. The welfare of LGBTQ students matters.
