Challenge

Not all students have the same access to the doors of opportunity that Computer Science opens because there are invisible cultural and gender barriers that prevent students from early exposure to computer science, putting them at a major disadvantage for future job prospects. It matters because If technology is designed mostly by nearly half of our population that's White or Asian middle-class males, we're missing out on the innovations, solutions, and creations that a larger diversity of our communities could bring. Even now, I walk into tech-related meetings and conferences as the only female of color with mostly males and my perspectives on building teacher capacity in educational technology is so different from theirs! Especially since the number of jobs in computer science is rising, we need to up the game to ensure all students have equal opportunities to access engaging and relevant computer science experiences.
