My school district has a vision for providing rich opportunities for learners to engage in student-centered, transformational learning experiences that will inspire them to be innovative communicators, collaborators, critical thinkers, and creators. Unfortunately, student-centered blended learning environments are not yet the norm in our classrooms. While there are some strong examples scattered around the district, it is clear that we have not yet established the culture to support this vision. Many teachers in our district are resistant to making instructional shifts toward student-centered learning, choosing to stay in their comfort zone of traditional, teacher-directed methods. These teachers have not yet been inspired or felt safe enough to take the risks necessary to transform their practice. I have a passion and urgency to address this deficit in our culture because I think that it is imperative for students to develop the critical 21st Century skills that are cultivated through student agency.
