Regardless of ethnic origin, culture, and language, parental involvement is paramount in the education system. Parents within my school district want to be included in every aspect of their child's education, but don’t feel they are able to do so because of the lack of resources: limited information in multiple languages, limited accessibility to teachers and staff, limited forms of communication, and limited knowledge of the school culture. Without these resources, parents are left in the dark in terms of the education of their child and teachers are left thinking that parents are apathetic about their child’s education. With minorities making up nearly 80% of the student body population in my district, it is paramount that the parents of those students feel included in the education of their child. The current challenge is how to create an educational environment and culture that is inclusive of all parents.
