Challenge

I find it really difficult to integrate physics lessons (a content-heavy subject) to improve my students' media literacy skills in terms of accessing, analyzing, evaluating and communicating media contents and messages to the community. I am really struggling on how to improve our students' media literacy skills as consumers and producers of media contents. As a science teacher, I often neglect this discipline as we focus merely on heavy mathematical computations and laboratory experiments. I came to wonder if students are aware of the socio-cultural and emotional aspects of new media beyond its technical characteristics. Are they even aware that the things they post on social media would leave digital footprints which may benefit or harm them in the future? Or does even know how to cite sources properly? identifying original from fake works? Although their feedback in their journal reflections entail awareness of the concern about the authenticity of the information, recognizing its impacts on society is still lacking. I firmly believe that this is an important area to tackle since we want to produce responsible digital citizens in the future, because living in this modern age has brought the learners to be exposed to different sources of information.
